Double Merle
Some dogs have a genetic disorder called “double merle” where they have a higher likelihood of being deaf or blind. This is caused by a mutation in the merle gene which causes a lack of pigmentation in the eyes and ears. This condition is most commonly seen in breeds such as Australian Shepherds and Border Collies, where the merle gene is prevalent.
Dogs that are born as double merle have a higher chance of developing vision and hearing problems, as well as other health issues. It is important for breeders to be aware of this and to not breed two merle dogs together.
