Third Eyelid
Dogs have a third eyelid, called the nictitating membrane, which acts as a protective barrier for their eyes and can be seen as a “haw” or “third eyelid” when it is partially visible. This eyelid is located in the corner of the eye and is made up of a clear or translucent membrane that can move horizontally across the eye.
The nictitating membrane acts as a protective barrier for the eye, keeping it moist and lubricated, and also helps to protect the eye from debris and foreign objects. This eyelid is particularly useful for dogs that hunt or are active in the wild, as it allows them to keep their eyes open and alert while running through brush or chasing prey.
