Hyperkeratosis
Some dogs have a genetic disorder called “hyperkeratosis” where they develop thickened skin on their paws and nose. This condition is caused by an overproduction of keratin, the protein that makes up the skin and nails.
This thickened skin can cause discomfort and cracking, and can also lead to secondary infections. Hyperkeratosis is seen in breeds such as the Bulldog and the Boxer.
